Pick your favorite show. Any show is appropriate but the emphasis should be placed on human behavior (not sporting events or documentaries). Take detailed notes as you go about the
characters. How are they dressed? What are their bodies like? Their faces? What do they do for a living? Are they rich, poor, or middle class? What race or ethnicity are they? How do they refer
to themselves? What is their age? Etc. One episode is likely not enough, so use a show you’ve been watching for a bit.
Share your findings with the class. Do not simply list the characteristics you found, but discuss what it means that the characters were portrayed in such a way. The characters are all DESIGNED,
meaning their clothing style, their speech, their job, their issues, their family structure, etc. are all specifically chosen. What purpose does this serve for YOUR show and its characters? Then, use
one or more of the three major theoretical perspectives to explain your findings (i.e. do you find that your show aligns more with the conflict, structural-functional or symbolic perspective?)
Guidelines:
Be respectful of others
Do not initiate or participate in personal attacks
Do not use profanity
Do not post items for sale (including textbooks)
Do not post solicitations for businesses
Do not post spam
I have the right to remove any posts or comments that do not follow these guidelines or that provide inaccurate information.
As an alternative to commenting on your classmates’ posts on each discussion, you will each be responsible for “moderating” one discussion post. Your duties will be to read and
respond to the class for that particular discussion post. I’ve split the roster between the seven modules and posted the list of students who will be responsible for each discussion post (the show I chose is THE FRESH PRINCE OF BELAIR)
