Henry
I’ve been given a sample intro about how the play as a whole is about family relationships
through King Henry’s concluding speech. I just can’t seem to get cracking on this so im just
looking for someone to do it perfectly:
The final words of King Henry in William Shakespeare’s play King Henry IV, Part 1 (1597)
emphasise the importance of family relationships at the conclusion of the play. The King relies
on family loyalty to reunify the kingdom when he sends ‘son John’ and ‘cousin Westmoreland’
and combines with his ‘son Harry… towards Wales’. These familial terms combines with the
emotive language of ‘Let us not leave till all our own be won’ reflects the King’s desire to unite
England through an appeal to familial duty. The importance of the relationship between fathers
and sons is reinforced elsewhere in the closing scenes of the play when the King pleads, ‘I
prithee, Harry, withdraw thyself, thou bleedest too much’ which reflects the reconciliation of the
two characters who were at odds at the start of the play. Shakespeare explores the complexity of
family relationships through his deliberate juxtaposition of settings and scenes as well as through
the introspective soliloquies of the King and Prince throughout the entirety of the play. This view
of family relationships being the driving engine of the play has shaped my judgement of the play
as a whole. It was relevant in Shakespeare’s era as Queen Elizabeth I never married and
consequently had no heir. This resulted in conflict amongst possible successors within the royal
family. The importance of family relationships, and the often dysfunctional nature of them,
remains relevant today in a world of high divorce rates and blended families. Thus, King Henry
IV, Part 1 explores the timeless and complex nature of family relationships.
