Discuss with specific references to the appropriate work any three of the following items in essays of about 500 words, more if you wish or as you consider appropriate. (Do not count words!) Number each item as indicated below.
N.B.: YOU MUST WRITE ONE ESSAY ON THE SUPPLIANTS, ONE ON THE
XERXES, AND ONE ON DIE ZAUBERFLŐTE.
1. Aeschylus on the importance of radical democratic process in his play, the Suppliant Women (this one)
2. Aeschylus on valuing essential likeness in accidental difference in his Suppliant Women
3. The significance of West and East Atossa’s dream in Aeschylus’s Persians; how this symbolically relates to the two wars with Persia (this one)
4. The Athenian view of Persian opulence and how this emerges in the Persians; why Aeschylus chooses to make this argument
5. The role of the three ladies and the three bearded boys in Die Zauberflöte (This one)
6. Triads, trials, and triangular relationships in Die Zauberflöte; as many as you can identify and what they signify in daily life
For each essay, here’s a suggested format:
-Introduction: Briefly introduce the topic
-Body: discuss in-depth the main idea of the topic
-Conclusion: summary of info, your thoughts
1. Aeschylus on the importance of radical democratic process in his play, the Suppliant Women:
Introduction:
-Aeschylus, (born 525/524—died 456/455 BC, Gela, Sicily), Greek tragic dramatist.
-This is the first and only surviving play of a trilogy probably put on in 463.
-It was long believed by scholars that Suppliants (Greek Hiketides; Latin Supplices) was one of Aeschylus’ earliest plays because of its archaic structure; its chorus, representing the daughters of Danaus (the Danaïds), takes the leading role in the action. (you could mention all of this, but I think just mentioning that it was one of his earliest plays is good)
-Discuss very briefly the context of the play and transition into speaking about radical democratic process
Body:
-Discuss what radical democratic process is more in-depth
-Include a specific reference in the body at some point
-Once you’ve mentioned what it is, then speak about it’s importance relative to Aeschylus
Conclusion:
-You can mention some more thoughts about radical democratic process
-Try to make the conclusion’s focus more so on your thoughts
-Conclusion doesn’t need to be lengthy, just somewhat of a summary on what you’ve mentioned up to this point
3.The significance of West and East Atossa’s dream in Aeschylus’s Persians; how this symbolically relates to the two wars with Persia
Introduction:
-Mention the play and its context
-Mention West and East Atossa’s dream briefly
-Transition to speaking more in-depth about it
Body:
-Speak more in-depth about the dream
-Speak to how it symbolically relates to the two wars with Persia
Conclusion:
-Summary of info
-Provide your thoughts
5. The role of the three ladies and the three bearded boys in Die Zauberflöte
Introduction:
-Introduce the writer of the play
-Context of the play
-Transition to body
Body:
-Speak about the role of the three ladies
-Followed by the role of the three bearded boys
Conclusion:
-Summary of info
-Your thoughts
