Questions to consider:
How did textile mills change life for southerners? Consider factors such as health,
education, and family life. Based on the available evidence, were the mills beneficial or
detrimental to Southern people and their communities?
Take-away:
Write a short (no more than 2 pages, typed, double spaced, 12-point font) response in
which you address the questions listed above. Your response must be framed by
a thesis statement. A thesis statement is an assertion, not a declarative statement of
fact. It is an argument that can be proven or disproven.
Your essay should rely on evidence drawn from at least three of the interviews. When
citing the oral interviews, be sure it is clear to your readers where you got the material
either by referencing it within the sentence or at the end (put it in parenthesis). You
should not do any research beyond the sources we provide. Be sure to provide a full
citation at the end of the paper for the interview collection:
