First, choose a primary research article regarding some aspect of nutrition or nutrient of interest to you. Second, find an article (or ad, infomercial, social media notice, etc.) that makes a health claim on the same topic of the research article you chose. For example, if you are interested in hypertension (high blood pressure) you might also be interested in the recommendations for sodium (salt) intake. Find a research article on how sodium effects blood pressure and then find information from the popular press (TV ad, infomercial, magazine, social media notice, etc.) that makes a claim about blood pressure and compare the credibility of the two. You will critically review and summarize the findings in the research article that you found in the scientific literature and compare those findings with health claims you found in popular press. Write your summary of the research article, use scientific format (introduction, methods, results, conclusion/discussion) – See the article summary example below. Briefly state the type of research: i.e. intervention, randomized-control trial, laboratory setting, etc. Summarize the reason for the study stated in the introduction. Describe the methodology and the results. Summarize the conclusion of the article. This should be about one-two pages of 12 point Font, double spaced. Cite your articles in APA, AMA or AND format. Then compare the scientific research to the popular press article. Were there similarities? What were the differences? Be sure to answer the following questions for each article: What type of information source did the article come from? What are the credentials of the author(s)? How do you know the information is credible? This should include more than if you think the articles are credible or not. Why do you think they are or are not credible? Which information would you follow?
