Select a story that is not in Ch. 9; discuss how setting affects the plot of the story. Does it create conflict, crisis, or force characters to act a certain way that effects the events or outcomes of the story.
General Essay Guidelines
1. MLA format: heading, header, works cited if needed.
2. Double space everything; 12 pt. Times New Roman font.
3. 5-6 paragraphs unless otherwise noted.
4. A minimum of 5 sentences per paragraph.
5. Use formal standard English.
6. Do not use I or you – use third person only
7. Never state, I believe, I feel, I think … just state sentences directly.
8. Steer away from starting sentences with: then, so, well.
9. State a thesis statement and underline it.
10. Have an introduction, body and conclusion in separate paragraphs.
11. Center your title and do not underline or put it in quotations.
12. Don’t state the obvious – show signs of critical thinking.
13. If referring to an author, refer to him/her the first time by first and last name and every consecutive time by last name only.
14. Italicize titles of long works (novels, newspaper titles, magazine titles) and put short works (poems, essays, articles) in quotations.
15. Indent paragraphs and don’t put extra spaces between them.
16. Two to three pages for essays, except the drama paper which is longer.
