In the 1960s, Andy Warhol shocked American art critics by elevating silkscreened images of consumer goods to the status of fine art. While many people may not have been ready to admit it at the time, Warhol captured a powerful shift in what constituted modern American life: consumer culture. It was not unlike what Realist painters in 19th century France did when they began depicting ordinary people in their work.
Look at the world around you. What do you think constitutes “modern life” today in the society you live in? Take to the streets with your phone or camera and try your hand at capturing modern life in a series of snapshots. Be creative and have fun with it.
In a Word document or PDF, include 2 of your favorite photographs and a brief artist statement for each. In the artist statement, explain where you took the photo, how you think it represents modern life today, and what formal elements you like about it. Each response should be a minimum of 150 words (300 total words total).
Tips: Avoid sentimental photographs of pets, kids, family, friends, vacations, etc.
