Your task is to write a 3-4 page paper where your engage with all parts of the following prompt:
What have you learned thus far about the way sociologists approach the study of social problems? First, define the phrase “sociological imagination.” Then, explain the difference between personal troubles and public issues. In doing so, draw on at least 3 of the following topics to help demonstrate your understanding of what public issues face contemporary society: poverty, racial and ethnic inequality, gender inequality, sexual orientation and inequality, & aging and ageism. When you draw on these topics, refrain from injecting too much opinion into your argument-making; instead, focus on using evidence from the text, readings, and films to support your claims and explicate your points.
The paper should be written in Times New Roman, 12 point font, and be double-spaced. You do not need a references page; instead, cite your sources plainly in text (e.g., “In chapter 3 of the textbook, a cited study found that…” or “In the film Growing Up Trans, they showed that…”). (If you do happen to draw on sources outside of class material – which is not required for this assignment – then you will need to include a references page of that material only.) Grammar is important in this assignment, meaning you should avoid “txt speech” and bullet-format writing.
An “A” paper will answer all parts of the prompt; draw on examples from at least 3 covered topics; drawn on a mixture of text, outside reading, and film materials (all 3); demonstrate a mastery of the course materials covered thus far; and be written with little to no grammatical and/or spelling errors.
A “B” paper will answer all or most parts of the prompt; draw on examples from at least 3 covered topics; draw on a mixture of text, outside reading, and film materials (at least 2); demonstrate a very good understanding of the course materials covered thus far; and/or be written with little to no grammatical and/or spelling errors.
A “C” paper will fail to answer noticeable parts of the prompt; draw on fewer than 3 covered topics; draw on a mixture of text, outside reading, and film materials (at least 2); demonstrate a basic understanding of the course materials covered thus far; and/or be written with noticeable errors in grammar and/or spelling.
A “D” or “F” paper will fail to answer the prompt; draw on fewer than 3 covered topics; fail to draw on a mixture of text, outside reading, and film materials; demonstrate a lack of understanding of the course materials covered thus far; and/or be written with severe errors in grammar and/or spelling.
