Each student will identify one current major challenge in the counseling profession. Some options to locate these current issues can be found in Counseling Today, The Journal of Counseling and Development, professional listservs, and other professional mental health/counseling journals.
Because information about this topic is shared with your peers, each paper/topic needs to be unique. Check to ensure no one else has picked that topic and then post the topic in the heading of the Discussion Board Forum so others can see your topic without opening the whole post. Duplicate topics may not be accepted.
The assignment will focus on the following information:
Write a paper detailing the issue. Key concepts related to this issue are addressed.
Explore and identify the ethical considerations associated with the issue using the ACA
Code of Ethics by identifying specific information from specific sections, and identify
these sections.
Explore and identify the legal considerations associated with the issue using public
policies and/or state/federal law/statutes.
Describe a specific solution to address institutional and social barriers that impede access,
equity, and success for clients, including identifying the professional counselor’s role of
advocacy in this solution.
Identify at least one additional strategy to eliminate barriers, prejudices, and processes of
intentional and unintentional oppression and discrimination.
Provide details on specific actions that could also be taken by the American Counseling
Association, licensure boards, or other professional counseling organizations (ex: CACREP,
AMHCA, etc.).
Summarize how your concern regarding the issue and related advocacy reflects your
professional counselor identity. (This is the only part of the paper that should be written in first person).
Structure paper with APA headings based upon the criteria above. See example paper/outline.
Academic sources are needed to help assist in the exploration of the issue (i.e., academic journals, textbooks, academic websites, government websites, and similar sources).
APA style and format count.
Correct APA citations required.
Minimum of four academic sources. Minimum of three are from the past 10 years. Textbooks and ACA Code of Ethics count.
Introduction and conclusion paragraphs needed.
Five pages min/seven pages max. Anything over the maximum is not graded. Focus on quality content.
APA formatted title page and reference page needed. These are not considered in page count.
Do not include an abstract.
