(1) Based upon the discussion in the excerpt from the OpenStax Introduction to Sociology 3e textbook, what is the difference between race and ethnicity?
(2) Based upon the discussion in the excerpt from the OpenStax Introduction to Sociology 3e textbook, what is meant by the term “social construction of race”?
(3) Based upon the discussion in the excerpt from the OpenStax Introduction to Sociology 3e textbook, define intersection theory (we will use the term “intersectionality” in this class). Do you believe it is necessary to use an intersectionality approach when studying race and ethnicity?
(4) In “The Mothers and Fathers of the Sociology of Race and Ethnicity: Learning from Them in Eight Lessons,” Brunsma et al. describe the development of the field of the sociology of race and ethnicity. The authors state: “In the following, we present eight themes that emerged in our coding of the data: (1) who inspired the mothers and fathers, and who continues to inspire them; (2) the role of debates and paradigms in SRE and the impact of BIPOC on SRE; (3) moving beyond the Black/ White binary; (4) the centrality of intersectionality; (5) the White space of academia—whiteness, discrimination and legitimacy; (6) marginalization of scholars(hip) of color and lack of support; (7) institutional/ service burdens and self-care; and (8) the ever changing same—then, now and the continued relevance of SRE” (Brunsma et al. 2021:2). Select one of the themes the authors identified in their research that you find most interesting or that you believe is one of the themes most relevant to our class. Discuss one issue raised by this theme and explain why it is important to the study of race and ethnicity.
