What Oceanographers Do Homework
Read websites or articles or watch videos about scientists who study the ocean. I have listed some sources of information below. Notice that my sources include students who are conducting research; I also consider them to be scientists. (Being a scientist has to do with what you do, not what degree you have.)
Make sure you pick articles that you understand, not just the first ones that you read.
Write 3 paragraphs about 3 different scientists. Each paragraph should include:
(i) the name of the scientist,
(ii) a URL (link) to your source of information or other information (e.g., article name, author, publication, data of publication) so that your reader can look at it themselves,
(iii) a description of what they research, and
(iv) why what they study is important (what the practical benefit or usefulness of their work is).
Describe information from the articles IN YOUR OWN WORDS. In other words, do NOT simply quote from the articles. Show that you understand what you read by expressing your understanding, by telling me what you took away from them.
Then, write 1 paragraph in which you reflect about what you’ve learned from this assignment, what it makes you think about or feel. (Paragraph 4 is a very open-ended question.) For example, you can talk about why you now think that studying the ocean in an important thing to do – or not so important. You can talk about what surprised you or interests you (e.g., what you will tell other people about what you learned). You can discuss whose job or lifestyle you would like to have – or not like to have – and why. Note: You do not have to answer all of these questions. Just write a paragraph (at least 4 sentences) on your thoughts about what you’ve learned by doing this assignment.
