Depending on its context, the term “girl” can come across as empowering, demeaning, or as a combination of both. As such, “girl” is a word that can be difficult to assess and address.

Carefully listen to the two songs that you have chosen with lyrics in hand.
Carefully watch the official music videos for both songs that you have chosen. Compare and contrast how (in your opinion) the idea of “girl” is addressed and presented in each video that you have chosen.

Watch Marilyn Monroe’s famous performance of “Diamonds Are a Girl’s Best Friend” from the film Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (1953).
Next, watch Madonna’s video for the song “Material Girl” from her album Like a Virgin (1984).
Compare and contrast these two numbers, considering all of the following: basic musical style, lyrics, visual performances, and relationship to the stereotype of the so-called Gold Digger.
