Find a passage in this week’s readings that seems important. Make sure it is complex and interesting enough to use for this assignment. In 2 pages typed and double-spaced), include the following in order:
Introductory sentence. This gives the reader a hint about what subject you’re going to discuss, and why it matters. It’s similar to a “topic sentence” from high school, but it’s not a summary of your overall point – it’s an introduction to a paragraph in which you develop that point. You may want to write this last or at least revise it after writing the rest.
Context for the quote. Explain what’s happening in the article at the point where you found the quote. You may also want to explain who the author is, though without just repeating empirical facts that may be found on Wikiepdia or SparkNotes. Such information should be focused on giving background information on the debates and discussions the article is intervening in to help you communicate your own ideas. This will depend on your particular argument and quote.
Give the quote. The quote should be around 40 words. If it is a little less than forty, surround with the quotation marks (“ ”) . If it is a little longer, indent the quote. (There may be an option for quotes but you should be able to indent.). Include a parenthetical citation, either way, like (Marx 56).
Paraphrase the quote. The goal of paraphrasing is to show how you have interpreted it, and to set the reader up to understand the point you’re going to make.
Analyze the quote. In other words, now that you have explained what this substantial and complex passage means, draw some conclusions about what the text is doing. Here are some examples of questions you might address, though you are by no means required to address all of them? Why does quotation matter? How does it support the distinct interpretation of the author? What has the author introduced to the field of comparative politics?
