Writing Assignment 2: Civil War Primary Source Analysis

Your final writing assignment for this course will require a scholarly analysis of primary source material.  The three primary sources include:

1. Memminger et al. Declaration of the Immediate Causes which Induce and Justify the Succession of South Carolina from the Federal Union, December 24, 1860
2. Lincoln, Abraham, First Inaugural Address March 4, 1861
3. Stephens, Alexander, On Slavery and the Confederate Constitution, March 1861. Your essay must be organized as follows:
   • Be no less than 750 but need not exceed 1000 words. 
   • Include one direct quotation from each of the three assigned sources. 
   • Use Turabian style footnotes to cite the direct quotes used.
   • No outside research is required or permitted for this assignment.
   • Utilize the Writing Guidelines and Citation Guide PDFs found in the Resource Module of this course. Focus your evaluation and analysis on a single idea or point. Don’t attempt to write about the entire argument.
