Annotated Bibliography Guidelines
Communication 3400: Introduction, Thesis, & Annotated Bibliography (25 points)
The purpose of the annotated bibliography is to provide you with a basic foundation for a working draft of your paper. This is also a chance for you to showcase what you plan to do in your final paper, and a chance for me to give you feedback on your ideas.
Part A. Introduction & Thesis. You will need to provide me with a preview of the introduction and thesis of your final paper. What is the specific argument you will be making in your paper? This should be a fully developed, organized, and specific introduction with a clear thesis. This introduction should provide a road map for the reader: What is the overall paper about, how will it be structured, and what is the main argument you will make?
The more specific you can be in this argument preview, the more feedback I can give you. No more than 2-2.5 double-spaced pages (see example).
Part B. Bibliography Entries. Based on your selected topic, you will select 3 articles that address the theory in some respect. Each source should contain the following.
- APA reference of each source
- Annotation Entry. In 1 or 2 paragraphs for each source, address the following components:
- Purpose of the source
- Investigation/method (i.e., theory application, procedure)
- Description of the source’s central arguments, key findings, takeaways in your own words
- 2 sentences describing the sources applicability to your thesis/topic
Notes on Source Selection Criteria: Each source annotated in this list must be either: (1) an original empirical investigation involving qualitative or quantitative methods (or both), or (2) a comprehensive theoretical review chapter from a sourcebook or handbook. If you are not sure if the chosen source meets the criteria, please ask me to check it over before including it in your bibliography. Textbooks (and other secondary sources), popular press articles, and trade publications do not meet these criteria and will receive a 0.
You will be graded on:
- Comprehensiveness, clarity, and logic of your project summary
- Completeness of the review of each academic source
- The application of the source to your overall argument
- Clarity, style, and correctness of your writing
- Adherence to APA style citations in the bibliography
Format Notes: Format should follow 1-inch margins, 12 pt Times New Roman font, page numbers in the upper right-hand corner. The introduction pages should be formatted in double-spaced text; the annotated bibliographies, abstracts, and application paragraphs may be single spaced, if desired.
All standard Com 3400 header information should be included on the first page; electronic filename submissions should also follow standards set forth in the syllabus.
An assignment with more than six grammar and/or formatting errors may be returned to you ungraded.
