Module 1 Discussion 2: Drawing Conclusions: What’s in my Lunch?

Now that you have had a chance to explore how we come to form knowledge using the scientific process, let’s see how we can apply it. The scientific method begins with questions, and so will we.

Think about what you had for lunch recently. What was it? Why did you eat it? More importantly, what was the biological function of that lunch? To answer that question, you must use the knowledge you’ve gained so far about macromolecules.

You should spend approximately 3 hours on this assignment.

Instructions

  1. Create a post that includes all the following information: (You might want to compose it first in a Word document, and then paste it into your discussion post so you don’t lose the information. Feel free to draw and scan an image, create a table, create a diagram, or write it out.)
    • Describe a recent lunch you had (or would like to have!). Make sure you include the ingredients, to the best of your knowledge. For example, if you had a sandwich, what exactly was in it? List the ingredients.
    • Determine the major class of macromolecule that is included in each ingredient. You can be specific, but make sure you include the name of the major group (e.g., lipid, protein, etc.).
    • Next, identify the monomer for each macromolecule.
    • “Describe the major function inside of your cells of each macromolecule.
    • In a paragraph, please explain what reaction occurs as you break down those macromolecules, and the reaction that occurs when the monomers are used by your body to build new macromolecules.
    • Finally, if there was any class or classes of macromolecule that was not included in your lunch, please take a sentence or two to describe it, its monomer, and biological function.
  2. Initial discussion posts should have a minimum word length of 150 words.
  3. Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts with questions. Response posts should be a minimum of 50 words. Feel free to point out how they presented something, helped clarify something for you, pushed your thinking, or made you question something you had not thought about. Also, respond to any questions on your own post.
  4. Respond to all questions.
