Task:
Write an academic essay that compares and contrasts two readings from our course. Choose one
essay topic from the list below (“Topics”). Your essays should consider the technique(s) the
authors/filmmaker uses the most effectively to persuade the audience. Make sure you provide
specific support for EACH reading you discuss.
Instructions:
– Write a multi-paragraph essay (approximately 700 words in length); include a thesis
statement in your introductory paragraph, at least three main points of
comparison/contrast, and a strong conclusion.
– Follow APA guidelines for formatting and citations. Double-space your essay, title page,
and references page.
– Use either block or alternating pattern in your essay structure.
– Use specific support from two readings in your essay (ie: quotations, paraphrasing,
summarizing). If you use a quotation, make sure you analyze it and discuss why you have
included it (do not simply insert a quotation and move on). Include in-text citations for all of
the evidence you use and a reference page at the end of your assignment.
– Organize your support in advance. Read/watch the materials multiple times before writing.
– Your essay is an analysis of the texts provided, not an opinion piece about the subject
matter. No personal opinions, generalizations, or anecdotes are required.
– Focus on analysing the specific elements (such as genre, tone, diction, voice, imagery, etc.)
in the texts.
– Proofread carefully for grammar, spelling and mechanics.
Topics (Choose ONE):
1. Charles Officer and Nuzhat Amin present experiences of discrimination in
Canada. Compare-contrast the use of PERSUASIVE TECHNIQUES (the
appeal to emotion, logic, and/or credibility) in both the documentary film, The
Skin We’re In (2017) and the academic essay, “South Englishes, North Englishes”
(1997). What similarities or differences can be found in the filmmaker and
author’s use of persuasion? Is one more effective than the other?
2. Matt Leland and Jessica Bennett discuss possible ways to make educational
institutions less stressful. Compare-contrast the use of SUPPORTING
EVIDENCE in both articles. What similarities or differences can be found in the
evidence used by the authors? Does one author offer more persuasive examples
than the other? Or does one author present the evidence in a more persuasive way
than the other?
