Paper #2 — Alfred Hitchcok’s Psycho is a landmark film, certainly one of the great films of the 20th Century. For this essay, I would like you to either select a formal element — cinematography, sound, editing, mise-en-scene–or a scene that “strikes you.” What is interesting about the scene? What are some of the elements that you noticed in it? Basically, you can select a single scene or moment or do an “overview” of ONE of the formal elements. Now, and this is IMPORTANT; YOU MAY NOT USE THE SHOWER SCENE!! EVERYBODY in the world knows, whether they have seen the film or not, about the shower scene. It is one of a handful of the greatest scenes in cinematic history. Everybody, scholars and “lay people” alike, who has been asked to write on Psycho invariably turn to the shower scene. In fact, I recently saw an ENTIRE FILM devoted to the study of that scene. It has been done to DEATH (pardon the pun), so you need to choose something else! Pick something you want to talk about, and talk about it. Just make sure to include some awareness of your “emerging film knowledge!” That’s it!
