Module 5: Theories of Duties and Rights
Course Outcomes: 1, 2, 3
Background: Chapter 4 of The Business Ethics Workshop includes the topic and reference to “the eternal return”. The “eternal return” is a thought experiment in which we can imagine that the life or options in life chosen will repeat forever.
The example is presented as this applying to an altruist, someone who dedicates their life to helping others.
Based upon the “eternal return”, the question is could the altruist continue to take certain actions to help others forever?
Purpose: This assignment will allow you to examine a past or current profession, as well as future goals, and apply the concept of “eternal return”.
Tasks:
1) Briefly discuss a past or current profession in which you have worked and/or in which you are currently working.
2) Briefly discuss your professional goals or future career goals (if different).
3) In your discussions for #s 1 and 2, include comments on several factors that led to your decisions. Taking into consideration the concept of the “eternal return”, are there any decisions pertaining to your career (past, current, and/or anticipated future) that you would take back and change?
4) Do you believe that your profession (past, current and/or anticipated future) falls in the category of an altruistic profession? Why or why not?
APA or other specific formatting is not required.
(In terms of length, the overall response should be in the range of 300-500 words).
