Students will prepare a proposal of an original research study on a health related area. In collaboration with the course instructor, students will undertake a research project of their own interest while considering the time limitations of the semester. Students will be encouraged to follow up on the work they prepared in their Research Proposal course and to begin their research project proposal/design as soon as the proposal is approved. This should be a practical, yet small-scale research project and does not necessarily involve the traditional research practice of working with human participants and ethics review, although it can (based on time and other considerations).
Research projects can involve an analysis of secondary data (reports, policy documents, etc.), or can involve interviews with service providers with whom it is reasonable to expect that their paid employment role involves such activities. Participations should not be considered “vulnerable” peoples as per the TriCouncil guidelines. If students wish to conduct research with human subjects, they will have to successfully complete the Seneca College Ethics Review Approval process (which includes the TCPS tutorial certificate, the application and approval process, and timelines that may be hard to predict; therefore, interviews or surveys should be minimal and involve a minimal number of participants in order to be completed on time).
All of these considerations will be discussed with the course instructor who will offer practical advice on how to best achieve the student’s goals within the parameters of the semester. Students will work independently throughout the semester on the project but do weekly updates on their progress in class. This is a non-funded project. Therefore, any research costs will be covered by the student. Students must take this in consideration when offering participant honoraria or travel expenses.
Greater attention should be paid to the research design segment of the study. Students should begin to work on this assignment early on in this semester. Class time will be committed each week for you to work on this assignment and to consult with your professor. Students are also encouraged to meet during office hours to get further clarity at the proposal stage. The following must be discussed in your paper:
Research Topic & Question: Clearly define the research problem and research question you are trying to answer. What is the problem you are trying to address? Why is it important to answer this issue? (0.5 to 1 page)
A literature review: A synthesize of at least 5 to 6 scholarly and peer-reviewed sources related to your topic and the importance of this knowledge as it informs your research question. (1.5 to 2 pages)
Research Design: Details on the methodology to capture the data for the study and data analysis plan. Explain your data collection methods. Explain your proposed sample. How will you recruit your sample? How will you control for any ethical considerations? Explain your data collection tools (e.g. standardized assessment tools? Focus groups? Etc.) – How many? When will you administer them? (2 to 3 pages)
Appendices: Additional information should be placed in this section. If you are using semi-structured interviews or focus groups, please include the questions (no more than 10) you intend to ask your participants as part of your data collection. (Additional pages)
Timeline: A timeline on how you plan to complete the project throughout the semester is needed. The timeline should be realistic and should include the remaining assessments for this course.
