Every year Tyseley Energy Recovery Facility accepts around 350,000 tonnes of Birmingham’s waste for incineration.
Question 1. Discuss the waste incineration process itself and the various emissions (including noise) that it produces (1200 words).
Question 2. Provide details of why and how these emissions should be controlled and provide references to applicable legislation, regulation, and guidance (1000 words).
The essay should be well referenced and critical, with peer-reviewed sources and legislation/regulation. Your writing should be clear and succinct.
I provide a wealth of sources , most of which will be relevant in answering the two questions. While you don’t necessarily have to use all the sources, you should try as much as possible to use those that best answer the questions. For example, the legislations most be used as they will provide ample information about how and why the emissions should be controlled. Feel free to include additional sources where necessary (i.e. published literature to strengthen your arguments). The links to important sources are within the word documents. I also attached key papers.
Please use multiple sources to critically analyse and synthesize your arguments. Use the Harvard referencing system and provide page numbers for any published journals or reports (so I can appraise them for myself). You don’t have to write an introduction and conclusion section. Kindly follow the essay structure below:
The waste incineration process (500 words)
Purpose of the incineration process, benefits of incineration process, description of the incineration process.
Emissions produced (700 words)
Atmospheric emissions: (SO2, dioxins, heavy metals), greenhouse gases [CO2, CH4], and noise (plant operations, vehicular traffic).
Noise, land pollution, surface and ground water pollution (leachates, rivers; bioaccumulation), dust and odours, wind-blown materials and debris, etc.
Source – pathway – receptors.
What are the receptors for each of the emissions produced? What are the adverse impacts of the emissions on receptors? For instance noise has the following adverse effects on health: conductive hearing loss, acoustic trauma, temporary threshold shift, tinnitus, presbycusis, hyperacusis, noise induced hearing loss, permanent threshold shift, presbyacusis.
Why and how the emissions should be controlled (1000 words)
What are the legal limits, mitigation strategies, and best available techniques (BAT)?
This is a technical piece of work, so should be assigned to someone with experience and expertise in the field. I look forward to a high quality paper; one deserving of at least 90%.
Thank you.
