Assignment Instructions The final assignment is a research report in which you will design a 2 x 2 factorial study based on the data provided. Your research report will be 4 pages, excluding the title page, abstract, and references page. The assignment will follow APA (7th edition) formatting and include an abstract, introduction, method section, results, and discussion which are briefly outlined below. For additional information on the headings below, please refer to your textbook (chapter 2). I have posted additional information for this assignment on Moodle, including peer-reviewed research articles. Abstract (no more than 200 words): The abstract appears immediately after the title page. Provide a clear and brief summary of what you predicted, your study design, and your findings (i.e., do give away the ending). Consult your textbook, lecture slides, and journal articles you have read for examples. The abstract appears on its own page and is not included in the page limit. Introduction: This section serves to illuminate why your hypotheses are important. Some introductions begin with a brief but meaningful hook to which readers can relate, so they become curious about your study. Of vital importance is the literature review. I have posted three research articles that you may use for your introduction. What does past research already say about your topic? How does your hypothesis build on this past research? Why is your research important? Be sure to appropriately cite at least two peer-reviewed journal articles in your literature review (one may be a review article). In addition, state your three hypotheses in the introduction. Method: Choose whether you’ll design a 2 x 2 repeated measures design, or a 2 x 2 mixed design (there are different data sets for each design – be sure you chose the correct data set). Provide a detailed description of how this study might have been conducted and an overview of how you might have collected the data (the data are provided on Moodle). Please be sure that your description of the methods matches your data set. Information regarding the questionnaires mentioned in the sample paper (posted on Moodle) will be provided. Results: Write a concise statement about what your results showed (e.g., group means, etc.) You need to provide a short paragraph describing the results (describe main effects and interaction effects). Remember to refer readers to your figure. Figure and table: Based on the discussion of graphs in the lectures and your textbook choose an appropriate graph to showcase your result. Use your data to create a table and graph and incorporate it in your paper following APA formatting. For examples of appropriate graphs and tables refer to chapter 11 of your textbook. Discussion: This section is a chance to demonstrate your ability to apply your understanding of course material (e.g., limitations and strengths of different designs) and to showcase your creativity as a researcher. Typical questions that are addressed in the discussion section include: Did your data support your hypothesis? What are the merits of your study design? What are 1 or 2 main limitations of your study design? What would you change if you could do it again? What are the implications or applications of your results? Note: If your results did not support your hypothesis, you can discuss the implications of your obtained data, or what might have been the implications and/or applications if your data did support your hypothesis. Discuss 1 or 2 future directions of this line of research. Given your current results, what question makes sense to ask next? What hypothesis do you have to examine regarding that question? Offer a well-reasoned study design (including operational definitions) for testing that hypothesis. References: Any statement of fact must be cited. In addition, whenever you have rephrased or summarized an idea from any author, you must cite them when you do so, at the end of that sentence (using APA style). Then, at the end of your paper, list the full APA style reference for the source. Only reference the sources you cite in your paper. APA style is a very precise referencing style, right down to spaces and periods. References are on a separate page and are not included in the page limit for the assignment. Additional comments: • The body of your research paper should be a maximum of 5 pages of text (plus title page, abstract, reference page). • Only include the information required for each of the above sections of your paper. • The method section should provide enough detail for the study to be accurately replicated. • Grammar, organization, spelling, and general writing style will affect your grade. Please proofread your paper. Grading Key CRITERIA EXCELLENT: High standards SATISFACTORY: Needs some work UNSATISFACTORY: Needs a lot of work 1.
