1. Research Proposal (40%) The research proposal is a literature review that culminates in a proposal for an empirical study on a topic chosen by the student. The student will review the relevant literature on the topic, critique that literature and develop a study that addresses limitations that arise from the reviewed literature. The proposal will consist of a specific hypothesis or small set of hypotheses and details of the proposed empirical study to test the hypothesis(es). Issues of research design should be discussed (e.g., between vs. within subjects, experimental vs. correlational). Finally, the paper should provide the expected results and a discussion of the implications of the proposed research. NO ACTUAL DATA WILL BE COLLECTED. Any materials that would be used in the empirical study (e.g., questionnaires, stimulus materials) should be included in the appendix. The research proposal will be between 12-15 pages in length not including references, appendices, or graphs/figures.

Students are required to submit a research proposal consisting of: 1) Abstract, 2) Statement of the research question, 3) Hypotheses, 4) Research review, 5) Methods section which includes design of the study, a description of the participants, measures, procedures, variables, etc., 6) Strengths and limitations of this proposal, 7) threats to internal and external validity, 8) multicultural and ethical considerations in conducting a study.
