Example:
Zoot Suit Riots/Sleepy Lagoon Murder Case
Use the film Zoot Suit as an example of the Chicano point of view of events in Los Angeles in the 1940’s.
Watch the “Zoot Suit Riots” (Links to an external site.) segment of the “War and Peace” episode of The Latino Americans for background on the Zoot Suit Riots.
The article “Zoot Suit Riots: The SLeepy Lagoon Murder Case That Helped Spur the WWII Era Los Angeles Race Riots” (Links to an external site.) by Ben Baeder for the San Gabriel Valley Tribune can be found on the Proquest database and is a good background for the Sleepy Lagoon murder case. (Note: This link does not work on all browsers. If it does not, go to the SCC library webpage and click on “All Databases”, then click on National Newspaper Core (5th link down) and enter Sleepy Lagoon murder into the search box. The article will be the 4th one listed.)
For primary source documents, search “Sleepy Lagoon” (Links to an external site.) at calisphere.org (Links to an external site.) and you will find 100 text documents, 90 photos from the trials, and a video interview with Luis Valdez.
Use as much or as little as you like to answer the question: Why is it important that creative authors like Valdez who have a Chicano point of view keep stories like the Sleepy Lagoon trial and the Zoot Suit riots in the public’s memory?
