Your adolescent cousin has just revealed that they are transgender. They have chosen a new name and will be using different pronouns from those assigned at birth.
Your aunt and uncle (as well as your parents) love and want to support your cousin, but they have some significant gender-role stereotypes and unconscious homophobia and transphobia.
Your grandparents are very religious. Your aunt and uncle are somewhat “traditional”. (You can choose the religious and ethnic background of the family.)
Your aunt and uncle don’t want to tell anyone (“It might be a phase.”) and aren’t using your cousin’s proper name and pronouns.
The family turns to you. Based on your knowledge of adolescent identity development (including self concept and self esteem), how do you help them understand the best ways to support your cousin?

For this assignment, you are expected to be an expert in adolescent identity development. This means that you explain the importance of identity development to your family. Please address the name and pronoun issues presented in the scenario in terms of positive adolescent identity development, and then refer your family to reputable organizations for supporting LGBT+ youth (such as the Penn State Center for Sexuality and Gender Diversity and Centre LGBTQA Support Network). Please keep the religious and ethnic background of the family authentic to your group. You should only be using a religious or ethnic background that is different from your own if a member of your group has shared their background with the group and offered to have you write the paper together. In other words, please don’t pretend to be a member of a Japanese family whose grandparents were missionaries in Hawaii unless that is true for you (or a member of the group has offered this family background for the assignment). The final paper should be “long enough”. I think this will be about 400-750 words. If you write the paper on your own, please acknowledge anyone you talked to in an Author’s Note. If you write the paper as a group, please make sure each author’s name is on it. Each member of the group will need to submit it individually.
