Write a thought paper. Thought papers will be your chance to critically respond to the course material and back up any editorial statements you make or positions you take with facts. For example, you may choose to react to Freud’s views on child development or contradict some of Piaget’s key points. I suspect you will have trenchant comments about medicating children. Perhaps you wish to comment on the use/misuse of intellectual assessments. These few topics only touch upon the range of possibilities. Each thought paper MUST be typed in American Psychological Association (APA) style. A mini lecture on APA style will be given in class. All thought papers will be limited to a maximum of two (2) double-spaced typed pages per paper.Basically, what I seek, as I’ve mentioned, is an Op-Ed type of piece where you express your professional opinion on a topic relevant to the course content. You can write about children, parents, grandparents, education, vaccines, pre-natal issues…the field is wide open! You do not need to have references, but you must back up your position professionally. If you use references that’s fine but if not that’s fine too. “I” language is allowed as well. You heard opinions in the Frontline documentary so follow that lead. It is similar to “FC doesn’t work for a number of reasons. The Facilitators are doing the typing. The kids never look at the keyboard. How can a 7-year-old who can’t talk suddenly write complex poems” and so on. You are of course free to use references, but it is not mandatory. However, saying FC is bogus and junk and going off without supporting your arguments won’t work, for example.
