For this paper, we will examine other areas in which music is a part of our lives. Research one of the following topics and discuss how music is relevant in your personal life. Consider the expressive potential music, a vehicle in which to illicit emotions in unique ways that words are not capable of expressing.
Music and Tradition – explore some cultural traditions in music; include your own ethnic background and the music of your family heritage; how does music influence our culture and traditions?
Music and Medicine – explore how music is relevant in healthcare and medicine; how can music be used to augment healing?
Music and Emotions – explore how music affects emotions and our behavior; why does a certain kind of music move us in a profound way? Connect music to any emotion of your choosing.
Music and Education – explore the patterns of music and how these patterns (i.e. rhythm) help us learn. Consider how we learn the ABC’s or names of the states.
Music and Genre – explore the many genres of music today; how do the genres today speak to life in the 21st century? What will historians say about our music 100 years from now? Consider how music is a reflection of the society in which it was produced. Try to connect genres today with others we have explored in class.
Your paper should include the following sections:
Introduction that discusses what you will talk about – this is your “thesis statement”
A body that covers information, such as that listed above (that is only a starting point – feel free to go in a different direction or present other ideas about “a world without music”)
The conclusion that wraps up the paper with at least one major take-away point
Works Cited list that includes at least two (2) credible sources. Refer to the “OJC LibGuides Information” page in the “Term Paper Info” module for guidelines on how to evaluate the credibility of sources and websites. A good place to start your research is by accessing the OJC LibGuides directly (https://libguides.ojc.edu/Home). Do not cite Wikipedia – it is highly controversial for many reasons. Please refrain from using Wikipedia in academic research!
FORMAT: Your paper should be written in proper MLA format (see Purdue OWL), double-spaced using a proper format, such as Times New Roman or Calibri in 12 pt. font. The length should be AT LEAST 750 words (three pages) in length, using complete sentences, correct grammar and spelling. Errors will result in a grade reduction.
