Volcanoes Introduction Volcanoes are geologic features that people find very awe-inspiring because of their explosive power when they erupt or the magnificent mountainous peaks they produce. In many cases, the high elevations associated with volcanoes are snow-covered and serve as recreation areas for winter sports. In terms of history, civilizations have located themselves near volcanoes because of the nutrient-rich soils found nearby, a produce of the volcanoes deposits that have built up. Unfortunately, these areas are often adversely affected by eruptions that have caused people to relocate. Lab Instructions Visit the Smithsonian Institution – Global Volcanism Program At the top of the page, click on the Galleries tab, and select Image Collections from the drop down menu. On the next page, review each of the three sections: Hazards and Processes, Studying Volcanoes, and Volcano Types and Features. click on Volcano Types & Features. Read each of paragraphs for each subsection and be sure to look at the images for examples. The quiz will cover information on these topics. When you have visited each topic, at the top of the page click on the Reports tab. From the Reports drop down menu, click on Smithsonian / USGS Weekly Volcanic Activity Report. Review the list of all recent volcanic activity. Select one of the volcanoes on the list that interests you. Compose a +400-word article of your selected volcano. It must contain the following information: Name and volcano type. (2 points) Country, sub-region, latitude, and longitude. (2 points) The elevation in meters and miles. (2 points) What is the volcano’s average VEI, based on its eruption history? When did the last major eruption occur (look for when the highest VEI level occurred)? (3 points) Historic news, facts, and interesting information. (3 points) Visit Google Maps and find your volcano. Describe the shape and features of the surrounding area.
