Use the grids to guide the essay.
Major Assignment:
For this assignment, you will need to choose your own academic article (two grid guides are from that work). You will then need to utilize rhetorical analysis to determine whether or not the article/author is effective or ineffective in proving their point.
It is important to note that this essay should not be a report on your article, but instead a detailed explanation of its content. I recommend avoiding lengthy articles to analyze; aim to pick an article that is 3-5 pages in length if possible.
The goal of the assignment is to get you comfortable with analyzing scholarly texts, and to help you determine what makes for an effective scholarly article. This could help influence how you research in the future as well as how to make your writing more effective from a rhetorical standpoint. Analysis tools are highly valuable in all kinds of research and writing, and you will use that quite frequently, especially in ENGL 106.
For this assignment, we will focus on:
Composing a strong thesis
What it means to analyze
How to analyze vs. how to summarize
How to find evidence to back up an analysis claim
