Instructions
Watch the video below.
Take notes of the musical elements used from beginning to end, using as many musical terms as possible. Because this is a practice for the concert report, where you will be asked to write more technically about one of the works, I copied below the list of elements for you to focus on (see at the bottom of this assignment). Try to answer as many info as you hear the work. Of course, you can heat it multiple times.
Last, write a paragraph describing the musical elements present in this piece (I do not need to see your notes, just the paragraph). Write them in a sequential manner, indicating HOW THE PIECE STARTS, HOW IT PROGRESSES AND HOW IT ENDED. A minimum of 170 words is required.
***This is a practice for the concert report so I can give you feedback, hopefully before you write your report. Below you see the list of musical elements to look for as you listen to the work. (These are similar to the items in the file “Instructions for your Concert Report”).***
Describing the Rhythm:
Tempo: slow/medium/fast
Can you detect the meter? *
Is it syncopated? Does it present any accelerandos or ritardandos? *
Describing the melodies:
More lyrical or aggressive?
Legato or staccato?
Are they conjunct or disjunct? **
Can you determine specific shapes (wave-like/ascending/descending)**
Describing the Harmony:
Consonant or dissonant?
Major or minor?
Diatonic or chromatic harmonies? *
Describing the Texture:
Monophonic? Homophonic? Polyphonic? Or a variety of textures?
TIP: Rarely a whole classical work is all in the same texture. But you can certainly have a predominant texture. Make sure to mention that. If you notice a change in the texture along the work, mention that as well (textures tend to change more constantly than other elements, so keep track of that and try pointing it out when it does).
Describing the Form:
Do you detect a particular form? * The main forms we have studied are:
VOCAL: Strophic, Through composed, Aria Da Capo (ABA), Chorus, Recitative
INSTRUMENTAL: AB, ABA, Ritornello Form, Fugue, Suite, Sonata Form, Sonata, Theme and Variations, Minuet and Trio, Rondo.
Dynamics and other expressive devices:
How was the general dynamics (how did it start? how did it progress? end?) Do you notice a notable usage of crescendos or decrescendos? Dynamic contrasts?
Do you verify word painting (vocal)? Or is it program music (instrumental)?
If vocal: is it mostly syllabic or melismatic?
Write these if you are fairly sure about this element. If you are not, don’t stress about it.
** these elements can be used when referring to a specific part in the music. It will not make sense if you use these to generalize (for example, state that all the melodies were conjunct will not work). In other words use these if you are analyzing and commenting on a specific section of the music.
