This is an assignment to analyze and explicate(explain) the song lyrics.
Write a two and a half to three (full) page poem explication, 650+ words of essay (this 650 words does not include the Works Cited page). Save your work as a Word.docx and not a link, PDF, etc. Note that these are the only options for this assignment; choosing a poem or song lyrics other than these options may very well result in a failing grade for this assignment.
IMPORTANT: Use both a Works Cited page and in-text (parenthetical) citations. Use line numbers rather than page numbers in the parenthetical citations each time the poem or lyrics are quoted or referenced. You’ll notice in the text book that the number of every fifth line is identified, and you can count between those markers to find the line number that corresponds with the line you are discussing. Poem titles are punctuated with quotation marks, not italics. Use MLA in-text citation for each reference to the poem or other sources. Remember that all references to sources must be cited, not just quotations.
Choose three extra sources to support your ideas. You must use the sources as support for your ideas rather than using one extensively to help guide your paper. For best grade results, choose scholarly sources from the library databases; do not use Wikipedia, Schmoop, Academia, Owlcation, or websites that sell papers! Avoid sources that do the work for you, such as literarydevices.net and poemanalysis.com. At least one source must be scholarly (peer-reviewed) from the library databases. Do not use the source extensively to guide your writing, as this is cheating. This is considered a short paper, and your writing voice should be dominant, so avoid relying very heavily on other sources. Avoid long quotes.
Using the Lyrics to American 60’s band song:
The Tales of Brave Ulysses
Written by Martin Sharp and Eric Clapton
Lyrics:
You thought the leaden winter
Would bring you down forever
But you rode upon a steamer
To the violence of the sun
And the colours of the sea
Bind your eyes with trembling mermaids
And you touch the distant beaches
With tales of brave Ulysses
How his naked ears were tortured
By the sirens sweetly singing
For the sparkling waves are calling you
To kiss their white laced lips
And you see a girl’s brown body
Dancing through the turquoise
And her footprints make you follow
Where the sky loves the sea
And when your fingers find her
She drowns you in her body
Carving deep blue ripples
In the tissues of your mind
Tiny purple fishes
Run laughing through your fingers
And you want to take her with you
To the hard land of the winter
Her name is Aphrodite
And she rides a crimson shell
And you know you cannot leave her
For you touched the distant sands
With tales of brave Ulysses
How his naked ears were tortured
By the sirens sweetly singing
Tiny purple fishes
Run laughing through your fingers
And you want to take her with you
To the hard land of the winter
Songwriters: Eric Patrick Clapton / Martin Sharp
