This is a Grade 12 Chemistry Journal Entry of 2 pages needed double-spaced and a bibliography of at least 3 sources.
Please choose a product (ie: sports equipment, clothing, vehicles, or building materials) not a technology, and trace how its composition has evolved in response to the development of new materials. Be sure to focus on the chemistry behind the development (ie: bonding, etc.) and avoid simply describing “how it’s made.”

Deodorant is a simple everyday product that most people use. As simple as it may seem, the way that this product is specifically made to be used as it is intended is fascinating. Deodorants are used for personal hygiene and can also be referred to as part of underarm skincare. It is important to have a particular product for underarms because they are considered one of the most sensitive skins on the body. The reason behind this is that the underarm skin is thinner than the other skin on the body. It is also not exposed to outside elements, such as sunlight, which can make skin tougher. The friction that occurs when rubbed against skin or clothing can cause skin irritation. It is also a home to lots of nerves and lymph nodes. The warm and moist environment of armpits is a “breeding ground for bacteria” (“Why Is Underarm Skin More Sensitive?). All these things highlight the importance of using a deodorant. It is designed to eliminate body odor and to feel fresh throughout the day. Deodorants also prevent bacterial growth in the underarms, which can enhance one’s health (Tipakov). All these claims can be proven by examining the chemistry of deodorant.
Deodorants are applied on the skin to help fight body odor by targeting and killing the odor-producing bacteria while still allowing the body to produce perspiration (Nguyen). Sweating is the body’s natural way of removing waste, which is why many researchers suggest using deodorant rather than antiperspirants (Frothingham). The chemical compound of E 3-methyl-2-hexine acid is what contributes to body odor. Another geometric isomer, Z (or cis) 3-methyl-2-hexonic acid, is also commonly associated with body odor but to a lesser extent. In order to mask the smell, antibacterial compounds such as triclosan and chlorhexidine are added to the product. Triclosan and ethylenediaminetetraacetic or EDTA prevent bacterial growth in the underarm region (Nguyen). In addition, deodorants are also mostly alcohol-based and consist of sodium stearate, stearyl alcohol and sodium chloride to help with eliminating odor. Humectants like propylene glycol and glycerin are added, as well, to prevent the product of drying out. Additives for PH control like triethanolamine and diethanolamine control PH levels of the skin when the deodorant is applied. Deodorants also contain preservatives like benzoate and parabens, which are less common, to extend shelf life (Nguyen). Depending on the company and brand, some scent-specific chemicals are also added to have fragrance. Some deodorants contain natural ingredients, as well, such as vegetable protein, shea and cocoa butter, beeswax and coconut oil to help with moisturizing the skin. The chemical compound of cyclomethicone, which is an odorless and colorless silicone compound, is often used as solvents in the product. This compound is too large to pass through the initial layer of the skin, therefore, there is no risk of absorption. It is added in deodorants because it does not irritate the skin and it evaporates quickly, leaving behind the deodorant’s active ingredients without the greasiness or stickiness (Nguyen).
It is interesting when the everyday ordinary things are looked at differently because it is being viewed by its structure and how it is made. The experiences become more meaningful when it is understood how something does what it does. As simple as the action of applying deodorant in the morning can now be more fun and interesting in a way knowing that it has several chemical compounds that react with body odor to eliminate it and to prevent bacterial growth. There are also many other compounds that help with other things, such as the prevention of drying out the product, controlling skin PH levels, extending shelf life and fast drying, that most people may not have thought of before. Chemistry truly gives new perspectives and new meanings even in the simple daily actions in the modern world.
