This course has been a cursory survey of the cinema, its history, and some of its major genres. Throughout, we have attempted to examine the growth of both technical and artistic skill sets and how such growth has manifested in the creation of remarkable films. We have seen numerous cases where an artist has become taken with the medium and mastered their own unique style of storytelling. And all along the way, we have been examining ways to write about film (criticism, review, and history). For your final paper, you are to choose a filmmaker you admire (there’s a suggested list below to help you) and write about their contributions to the world of film: the salient features of their work, the history of their artistic growth, and the lasting effect they have left as their legacy. The paper should be approximately 5 pages, with good grammar, spelling, and punctuation (writing quality will count along with ideas). It is important that you include examples of the director’s work and cite it properly, along with historical background and commentary. To be even reasonably effective, you should examine at least three prime examples of their work (including one that is NEW TO YOU) and you should read/include comments from at least two authorities. NOTE: I would really prefer this as an exploration of one artist’s work and their contributions, which may mean discovery—a good thing. Any other approaches or ideas MUST be presented and approved by the instructor prior to turning in the paper. Due Wednesday, December 22nd — no extensions, please, as grades must go in soon after.
