This assignment will ask you to do three things:
1. Pick one of the pieces of the 1619 Project and examine it thoroughly.
2. Detail how the piece is interdisciplinary in nature and how it moves beyond traditional
boundaries.
3. Apply your own BLA interdisciplinary perspectives to the piece to find ways to contribute
to the conversation and advance our understanding of the problem.
Outline:
What is the argument of the piece? (Start with a vague summary, and try a few more times getting your statement to be more precise and specific and debatable.)
Examine the title. How does the title begin the work of the argument; how does it engage the reader? What are the key terms and why?
What is the piece’s rhetorical mode? In other words, what is the tone or the manner of communication? What kind of relationship with its reader is it trying to establish?
What kind of audience does the piece anticipate / imagine? Does it try to engage its opponents well enough? How might it do better?
What individual disciplines inform your piece?
How does your piece blend the different disciplines? Where does it do so, and why?
What is your own ID perspective? What happens when you blend your two perspectives together? What unique advantages/strengths does your blend have? What kinds of questions or concepts or concerns does it encourage you to pursue?
How might you use your ID perspective to add to your piece and the conversation it is a part of?
* My interdisciplinary (ID) perspectives/ concentrations are Health Studies and Psychology*
