This assignment asks that you develop your writing skills so that you can effectively argue your point of view.
Ensure that each idea is substantiated with appropriate evidence, and that ideas are organized logically, and explained in well-developed paragraphs. Please also remember that this is a literary analysis. You should not be writing about
whether you like the story/ characters or not, nor should you be judging it as ‘good’ or ‘bad’.
You must instead explain what you think is the literary and/or cultural significance of the text, drawing reasonable inferences from the texts you have chosen.
As this is a literature course, you will be expected to do a close reading of the language to support your argument
(narrative style, poetic form,characterization, patterns of imagery, focalization, symbols, themes, motifs etc).
While you may use scholarly sources to support your interpretation, your paper MUST offer a substantial amount of
YOUR OWN IDEAS AND THOUGHTS. Please avoid mere rehashing of information accumulated over the semester and
from secondary resources.
A passing paper must have:
1. A clear, well-focused, concise, and original THESIS that makes a claim about what you think is the overall meaning/ significance of the text is.
2. Specific examples/ evidence from the primary texts that support the claim or claims that you are making. Remember, just including quotations or excerpts is
not enough. You must analyze (hence the term ‘analysis’) the quotations, and explain how they support your assertions.
3. MLA formatting

 Standard MLA formatting
 Margins: 1” on all sides
 Font: 12-point Times New Roman
 Double-spaced
 Alignment: Left, not justified, centered, or right
 Heading: Your name, teacher’s name, section, and European style due date
 Title
 Header: Your name, matric number
 numeric page number,
 Proper internal citations & a Work Cited page
 5 pages long excluding Works Cited page
 MUST be Microsoft word documents.
