There are two important tasks to be completed in this module:
Now that your research topic has been approved by your instructor and you have written the introduction to your paper, you are ready to begin a serious review of current literature. The purpose of the literature review at this time is to build a case for your topic being relevant. It answers the questions: (1) What do we already know about this topic? and (2) Is there foundational research out there that is being used to drive instruction and/or policy? Reviewing the literature gives you some insight into how others may have conducted research on your topic — their research design, the data collection tools they used, how they organized and analyzed the data, etc. in addition to their findings. This doesn’t mean you have to follow in their footsteps — but it does help you to avoid pitfalls they may have encountered and mentioned in their writing. Often a researcher will end his/her research report with suggestions for further study, which my help you in your own research design.
Learn to use a “critical eye” to determine if research is trustworthy. With the exponential increase in electronic sources available, it is imperative that a researcher know the criteria to select trustworthy sources. Maintain your own credibility as a researcher.
Follow the steps in Activity 3.1 of the Hendricks text. (Reading: Read pages 17-20 in Action Research Guide for Alberta Teachers
Read Chapter 3 in the Hendricks text.) This component of your research proposal should:
summarize current research in your area of interest (at least 3 sources published within the last 10 years) – note that you will expand upon this literature review in EDU 690;
further clarify and focus your study;
support the need for additional study of the problem;
utilize APA format for in-text and reference page citations
be at least 500 words in length.
NOTE: This component should follow the introduction section you wrote in the last module. From this point forward you will simply add each new component to your paper and save it with a new name in your completed work folder. I will only grade the “new” component each week. That way, when you have written your last component you will have a completed paper. Each time you add a component to your paper don’t forget to update the reference page if necessary.
