The poet T. S. Eliot said that appreciation of a poem should precede our understanding
of it. I would add that appreciation of a poem depends at least in part on whether the reader can
empathize with the feelings expressed in the poem. In this analysis you will consider in detail the
emotions that the poet expresses in the poem. Choose any short poem in your text of 25 lines
or less that is not on your syllabus or that we have not discussed in class by November 4. In an
essay of 3-4 typed pages in length, discuss the emotion(s) expressed in the poem by the poet.
Include your own title, not the title of the poem.
