4.2 Assessment Details and Guidance
An Academic Poster with a Critical Commentary of 2000 words, OR a 20-minute presentation with
critical commentary.
Early in the module, you will be presented with a range of case studies about different ways to
promote health. The health topics, cultural communities and settings vary so I hope you find
something that interests you! These case studies represent past research endeavours and give
details of what was done, why and to what effect. Within the narrative – it sometimes obvious and
sometimes less so, that the authors utilise some, or all, of the key concepts we will cover in this
module.
You are tasked with summarising the case study information and to present this in poster form –
an academic poster. Your poster should also highlight any obvious key concepts that were used, and
you should reference these concepts using academic literature. The poster content should
12
essentially be desсrіptive and use a minimal amount of refences. It should clearly communicate to
the viewer what the case study is about; i.e. where the activity took place; when and who was
targeted, and of course why? How was the health promotion activity done? What key concepts do
you think were in operation? Text, images and graphic may all be used for the creation of your
poster. For more advice, please consult the guidance about producing an academic poster in the
assessment help folder on mybeckett.
Your poster should be accompanied by a 2000-word critical commentary about how the theoretical
key concepts were used in application: were they clearly understood by the actors who used them
and were they applied appropriately – according to the theory? Do the authors reference the
literature and define the key concepts clearly/correctly? Does the case study make use of enough
key concepts or should more have been incorporated into the approach? Give your reasoning either
way.
You may find it helpful to use an essay format to structure your commentary. Essays should have an
introduction, body and conclusion. As a suggestion, you may wish to write 250 words on the
introduction, 300 on the conclusion and the rest of your word limit (1450) on discussing the
application of the key concepts in evidence – or those which you feel should have been used but
were not. You may wish to structure your paragraphs of the body of the essay by handling a key
concept at a time. For guidance about how to write essays, please go to skills for learning on
mybeckett.
Alternatively, you can write your commentary as a report. Reports convey factual content concisely
and make use of bulleted/numbered points/graphs etc. Reports usually include a conclusion and
offer recommendations. If you choose this option, you need to convey what was done and to what
effect. You then need to highlight the key concepts that were /should have been in operation and
give some indication as to why. Your evaluation of the application of key concept should be
presented in the conclusion section where you should write a lengthy recommendations section if
the application of key concepts was poor.
OR
As an alternative option to the poster and written commentary, you may wish to create a 20-
minute PowerPoint presentation or Prezi – complete with an audio soundtrack which provides a
critical commentary for your chosen case study. The information you focus early on in your
presentation should summarise the case study and highlight any obvious key concepts that were
used. You should reference these concepts using academic literature. When summarising the case
13
study, you should clearly communicate to the audience what the case study is about; i.e. where the
activity took place; when and who was targeted, and of course, why? How was the health
promotion activity done?
——-Summative Assessment: A policy proposal on a health topic of your choice (100% of marks) 3500 words – assesses all learning outcomes.
The idea of this assignment is that you will:
Pick a topic of interest for health promotion policy intervention.
Write a 3500-word policy proposal in which you apply what you have learned in the module and how it relates to policy for health promotion.
Assessment criteria for the Policy Proposal
The assessment will be marked with reference to the following criteria:
1. Introduction / rationale (30% – LO1)
Clear identification of a relevant topic area including a brief contextual justification and rationale for policy intervention. Why is this an issue for public health and why is a (new?) policy approach appropriate?
2. Main argument / critical discussion (40% – LO 2-4)
Critical discussion of the policy options available using examples to explore the evidence of potential strengths and weaknesses, as well as practical, political and ethical issues (For example policy levels, agenda-setting, ideas around policy development, implementation and ideological positioning and values).
Identification and critical discussion of the contribution of policy theory and its relationship to wider health promotion concepts.
3. Conclusion (20% – LO 1-4)
Clear, practical and realistic policy recommendations
4. Presentation (10%)
Logical structure with a well-constructed and articulated argument.
Accurate Harvard referencing. Well supported by the academic literature.
——Quantitative analysis (1200 words)
You will be given a Word file containing a SPSS output from an analysis of a data set to interpret for
this piece of work that you will download from MyBeckett.
You are required to write TWO sections. Failure to address the assignment in its entirety often leads
to failure of the task.
Section A
Write up the findings and present data that addresses the objectives of the research study. You
should present data in the style of a results section in a journal article (500 words). Tables and
Figures form part of the word count and should be included within the text. You should explain what
the results mean in terms of statistical significance and with reference to the research questions
given in the assignment brief, but you should NOT discuss the findings in the context of the wider
research literature. You will be given an exemplar article that you should use as a guide for how to
present results for an academic audience.
Section B
2021/22 Module Handbook 9
This should demonstrate your theoretical and practical understanding about the analytical processes
and statistical techniques drawing on your analysis in section A to illustrate your points. You should
discuss including the following issues (700 words).
 Importance of levels of measurement in statistical theory
 Understanding of probability and statistical significance
 How to choose statistical tests and theory about the tests
 Understanding of the assumptions of parametric tests
 You will also produce a Harvard reference list to support this section
Assessment Details
You have two assessed components. Each component is weighted at 50%.
1) Qualitative analysis (1200 words1
)
Using the transсrіpt provided, carry out the qualitative analysis. This should include:
 Desсrіption and justification of the approach you took to analysis. If you have chosen thematic
analysis, say why this was selected using sources to support your rationale.
 Describe the actual process of analysis – try not to rephrase generic ideas from textbooks,
instead try to provide examples from your own experiences of analysing the data.
 Present part of your analysis of the material using quotations to support your analysis. It is
absolutely fine to present say one or two themes in some depth rather than the whole of your
analysis.
 Critically discuss how your own experiences or perspective played into your analysis (please
think here about reflexivity).
 Produce a Harvard reference list of supporting academic information.
The word count can be restrictive and so ensure that your desсrіption and rationale is clear and
succinct. Also, do provide supplementary materials in an appendix to show detailed processes of the
analysis. This may include the process of coding or theme development.
