In Week 6 of the course, we will be discussing the concept and measurement of psychopathy. In this research paper, you are asked to write about the assessment of psychopathy. Specifically, you will assess any individual/offender you choose (present day or from the past) for the presence of psychopathic traits as a case study.
You are required to submit an outline of your paper by the end of week 9 using THIS template demonstrating that you have selected a case to analyze and that you have begun to acquired sources.
Follow the following instructions for each section of your paper:
Introduction of the Paper: At the outset of your paper, include an introductory paragraph, including a statement of the purpose of your paper, roadmap concerning how your paper is organized, and the sources you relied on for your assessment.
Overview of Psychopathy: Write your paper from the perspective that your reader will have little working knowledge of psychopathy. As such, you will want to clearly define psychopathy and important issues about the construct and it’s assessment to demonstrate your understanding (e.g., factors, gender issues). In addition to course readings, you will need to do additional research to write this section. I recommend searching the WLU library online using the PsycINFO database as a starting point.
Case Review: Provide a case summary of an individual /offender who, in your opinion, would meet the criteria for a diagnosis of psychopathy as discussed in the textbook. Provide clear, detailed examples of the offender’s history/behaviour/disposition and explain how they reflect the various interpersonal/affective and behavioural symptoms of psychopathy as discussed in Chapter 6. You are strongly advised to review section 6.2 Assessing Psychopathy in the Course Notes for a textured discussion of Factor 1 and 2 psychopathic traits. In addition to course readings, you will need to do additional research to write this section. You may find films, books, news articles to be particularly useful to gain a background understanding of your selected case.
Conclusion: At the end of your paper, provide a brief review of your arguments and state whether you conclude that this individual meets the criteria for psychopathy. Discuss the implications of your findings. Conclude your paper.
Technical Requirements:
Your assignment should be approximately 5 to 6 pages, double-spaced, non-inclusive of your title page and references. The overall format of the paper and the references should conform to the American Psychological Association (APA) formatting and referencing style. You should use a Times New Roman, font size 12, with 1-inch margins on all sides of the paper. Be sure to cite and reference all of your sources. Include an APA formatted title page.
A few additional notes about the submission of assignments:
Assignments must be in Microsoft Word (.doc or .docx) format to be opened and graded. If you use another word processing program, you must convert the file to PDF format. However, the PDF format will not allow for any comments on submitted work.
It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that assignments are uploaded to the appropriate Dropbox folder and are readable. In the event that a file is corrupted or cannot be opened, you will be contacted immediately and asked to re-submit the assignment. Late penalties will still apply.
