Students are required to complete weekly activities and skills that align with the course outcomes. Students are to use the correlating weeks activities and instructions to successfully accomplish this assignment each week. Your reflection of each week will be in the form of an individual discussion board. Each week you will reply to your previous post as you normally would reply to a peer. This discussion board will not be visible to other students in the course.
This week you are to review client education materials used at the practicum site. As you inspect these materials consider how a client with a low level of health literacy would interpret.
Reflect on the types of education materials being used at the clinic. How many printable materials are available? How many audiovisual materials? In your opinion, does the site have sufficient educational materials available? Why or why not?
Describe the importance of written information, including medication labels, to ensure a client’s understanding of and potential adherence to the treatment regime and/or plan of care. Provide an example of a negative client outcome related to misunderstanding instructions as a result of at least one health literacy component (consider misunderstandings in medication management). Summarize best practices related to client education and health information materials design.
Identify at least three client education materials for further evaluation and comparison. Using the AHRQ’s Patient Education Materials Assessment Tool (PEMAT) evaluate the client education materials used at the practicum site for consideration of content, word choice and style, use of numbers, organization of information, layout and design, use of visual aids, and actionability. Use this form to document your findings.
Reflect on your findings from your evaluation and comparison of at least three client education materials used at the practicum site. Consider the influence on behavior and outcomes. Discuss your findings as it relates to consideration of content, word choice and style, use of numbers, organization of information, layout and design, use of visual aids, and actionability.
Identify the readability of each client education material being compared using at least one or a combination of the following readability formulas: a) Flesh Reading Ease formula, b) Felsch-Kincaid Grade Level, c) Fog Scale, and d) SMOG Index. Do not use computer generated results as this is a learning exercise to ensure you understand how to properly evaluate the readability of materials. Upon completion, describe your findings. Determine if the materials evaluated are adequate and sufficient. Support your findings.
Choose one of the client education materials inspected. Revise all areas identified as inadequate or insufficient using best practices for written health information. Submit as an attachment with your reflection.
