S‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ystematic Approaches of Trait, Skills, and Behavioral Leadership Approaches This week, you will explore traits, skills, and behavioral leadership approaches for the benefit of the school community. Systematic Leadership Approaches What are systematic approaches to leadership? To further understand leadership, you should be familiar with the basic definitions of common systematic leadership approaches: trait, skills, and behavioral. Trait The Trait approach focuses on identifying various innate personality qualities necessary for being an effective leader. These personality characteristics help leaders in various settings. Leaders react in a consistent manner in these various situations, thus leading theorists to believe people are born with this systematic leadership approach (Cherry, 2019). Skills The skills approach focuses on describing a set of competencies or capabilities necessary for being an effective leader. These skills can take time for leaders to learn and master effectively. Therefore, future leaders may not be born with these skills, as indicated by the trait theory. However, certain personalities may learn effective leadership skills more easily than others (May, 2019). Behavioral The behavioral approach focuses on the external or physical actions of effective leaders. Theorists have worked to categorize several types of behaviors evident with effective leaders and those who are not as effective. Some behaviors are task-oriented while others are people-oriented. (Mulholland, 2019). The leadership concept encompasses the leader, follower, and the environment in which the leader leads. Before the twentieth century, researchers grappled with the idea of leadership effectiveness (Germain, 2012; Grobler, 2016). Beyond an organization’s climate and culture, structure, and human capital, a leader is the heart of the leadership process (Northouse, 2021). The initial focus is to begin comprehending leadership efficiency and improving a leader’s approach, disposition, or style. It is critical to know a leader’s innate being, a leader’s abilities, and a leader’s actions (Anderson et al., 2020). However, over the years of studies, researchers have not collectively defined these components to establish a generalized consensus among scholars to credibly state what makes a leader great and excel in an organization (Northouse, 2021). The trait approach identifies various innate personality qualities necessary to be an effective leader (Cherry, 2019). The skills approach focuses on describing a set of competencies or capabilities and dispositions necessary for being an effective leader. The behavioral approach focuses on the external or physical actions of effective leaders. For example, there are school leaders who display a strong ethical purpose combined with honesty and integrity. They are committed to student success and are relentless in inspiring others to be a positive role model for students. They are visible in the school halls and classrooms, and they never miss an opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of both studen‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍ts and staff members. These leaders are inspiring and excited about the possibilities for the future of their school. They are compassionate and transparent, as their concerns are genuine. All three of these leadership approaches operate together, rather than in isolation, to formulate and define a leader. These leadership approaches are concerned with the leader, not the workers, or the unique situations occurring within various settings (May, 2019; Mulholland, 2019). This week’s assignment includes traits, skills, and behavioral leadership approaches for you to consider how you might utilize this information to benefit fellow leaders and colleagues. Assignment: Analyzing the traits, skills, and behavioral leadership approaches can help you understand how to evolve as a leader. Not only can these analyses benefit your style, but they can also benefit those you lead. Assume you have been asked to provide training materials for the principals in your school district. Utilizing this week’s resources and additional applicable scholarly sources, prepare a best practices tip sheet that includes the following: * Describe each of these three leadership approaches. Include an example of each to illustrate your findings. * Analyze the traits, skills, and behaviors of effective leaders you have experienced. You may also include those you possess that make you an effective educational leader. * Explain the traits, skills, and behaviors most educational leaders need to change to improve their ethical leadership effectiveness. * Describe the traits, skills, and behaviors you believe you would like to change to improve your effectiveness as an ethical educational leader. Length: 2 to 3-page tip sheet of best practices, not including title and reference pages References: Include a minimum of 5 scholarly resources. The completed assignment should address all of the assignment requirements, exhibit evidence of concept knowledge, and demonstrate thoughtful consideration of the content presented in the course. The writing should integrate scholarly resources, reflect academic expectations and current APA standards, and adhere to Northcentral University’s Academic Integrity Po‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‍‍licy.
