RUBRIC IS ATTACHED, PLEASE BE SURE TO FOLLOW THAT.
So far this semester, we
have read texts about rhetoric, social media, activism, and the various ways in
which they intersect and influence each other. We have examined how different
kinds of evidence, online platforms, writing styles, and ways of understanding
digital activism’s influence on more “traditional” forms of activism, both digital
and in-person, has shaped various movements’ actions, ethos, and perception
from internal and external parties and the general public.
For your synthesis paper,
you will
1. Observe,
record, and analyze the rhetoric used in at least (4)
different examples of digital activism of your choosing that showcase
examples of online activism for your chosen common cause/movement, and
2. (Optional)
Use secondary sources to show how your analysis fits into a larger
conversation about the effectiveness of online activism
For this assignment, you
will analyze, in detail, social media/online writing that was created for THE
#METOO MOVEMENT.
Assignment
Objectives
Your thesis statement
should answer the following question: What rhetorical strategies and appeals do
you observe as the most effective and/or the least effective within your chosen
cause/movement to share what message or encourage what social or policy
changes?
This assignment will
require you to research THE #METOO MOVEMENT. This will mean
understanding:
1. The
goals or aims of THE #METOO MOVEMENT and how it was created to fulfill
and the primary social issues the cause/movement is concerned with;
2. How
various primary source texts are written rhetorically to spread the cause/movement’s
messages/influence change using digital activism;
3. The
rhetors/writers and audience involved in and currently shaping the
cause/movement, especially in online conversations.
As you research and write
on your topic, consider the following:
·
What kind of language/rhetoric do your primary sources (examples
of online/social media) use to support their main claims/ideas?
·
What kinds of evidence do your primary sources (examples of
digital activism) use to support their main claim/idea?
·
Do the rhetors/authors of these source texts offer
counterarguments? If so, what are they and how do they address them?
Assignment
Expectations and Conclusions
Because this is a
relatively short paper, I do not expect you to have all of the answers by the
time you complete your paper: remember, the objective is to synthesize your
research aka show that you know how to draw relationships between sources and
analyze rhetoric.
Therefore, when you are
writing the conclusion for your paper, you should not offer definitive
conclusions but rather address how your research has illuminated gaps in
rhetorical study of THE #METOO MOVEMENT participation in digital activism
and/or avenues that should be further explored to better understand the digital
practices of THE #METOO MOVEMENT.
