Research Paper: As humans, we have numerous biases, so this assignment offers you an abundance of topic choices. You can write about one of the many biases we have discussed in class or choose a bias that is of particular interest to you. The assignment is a problem/analysis paper, which means that you analyze the bias and then pose possible solutions for the bias. Regarding analyzing the bias, choose two or three ideas that construct the bias and analyze how each idea is disseminated or spread in society. For example, ideas behind sexism might include females are inferior to males; females belong in the home; females are sexual objects, and females are emotional. Selecting at least three ideas, analyze how each idea is spread through specific entities in our society such as families, religions, schools, television, and films. Use specific examples to analyze each idea. In media, for instance, the idea that women are sexual objects is spread through the focus on women’s personal appearance, no matter if the women are actresses, politicians, athletes, or professionals in other fields. News coverage focused on Hillary Clinton’s appearance both times she ran for president. Moreover, media negatively commented on her demeanor because she didn’t seem relaxed and happy. Sexism says that women are supposed to be nice and/or cheerful. As for the solution discussion, keep in mind that there isn’t always a one-to-one correspondence between problem and solution. For example, the presidential hopeful Andrew Yang analyzed the problem of people losing jobs to technology and posed a monthly subsidy as a solution. Because a solution doesn’t necessarily correspond directly to a problem, analyze the ideas that construct the bias before posing solution(s). Thus, one solution to sexism might be passing an equal pay law. Another possible solution might be establishing specific hiring quotas within professions, particularly for leadership positions.
