Purpose:
The purpose of this assignment is to provide students with an opportunity to explore and to critically examine the American Nurses Association Code of Ethics for Nurses
(2001) as it applies to professional practice in contemporary health
care. The student will critically examine the meaning and relevance of
the Code of Ethics for Nurses as it applies to your selected case study.
Process:
A. You will need to research your own case study using the library
resources explained in the PowerPoint below or other resources available
to you. This needs to be a documented case in which an ethical issue
was violated or in question by the courts such as the Cruzan case NOT a
topic of discussion.
B. Write a 5-7page paper (body of paper) that addresses the relevance of the Code of Ethics for Nurses, including the following:
Describe the purpose of the Code of Ethics for Nurses.
Summarize key data of the case study being examined, including
factual information, ethical issues (moral agent(s), ethical principles,
potential or actual ethical conflict(s), and relevant contextual issues
(legal, cultural, political, religious).
Identify the decision you would make in this case and include your reasoning for making this choice.
Discussion of the relevant applicable provisions of the Code of
Ethics for Nurses to the selected case. Include interpretive statements
for each provision that you believe are appropriate to the case and
discuss why these provision(s) apply and would support the ethical
decision you would make in this case.
Conclusion addressing how you see yourself using the Code of Ethics for Nurses in your future practice as a professional nurse.
C. APA format is to be used in the text of the paper and in the reference list. You will be also graded on

I have been receiving questions about the final paper so to clarify:
I would encourage you to find a legal case in which the code of
ethics has been broken, this will make it easier for you to evaluate the
case study in which you can look at each provision of the code and see
ones are breached to cause the ethical issue. (this part is worth the
bulk of the assignment points)
I do understand that some of you are not in the nursing program but
every healthcare field has its own code of ethics. I use the code of
nursing ethics in this class because it has well defined provisions of
the code which I believe makes it easier to evaluate and see where a
breach in ethics has occurred when evaluating a case study.
Remember to do your best work with the case study copied at the end of your paper. Good luck
