Mary is a 33 year-old, female, Latina, married, elementary school teacher. She was walking her dog after work one evening, approximately two weeks ago, when she witnessed a man on a bike get hit by a car that blew through a stop sign and left the scene. Mary and two other bystanders ran to help the man. There was a lot of blood, and the man appeared to have sustained serious injuries. Mary reported feeling “numb” and calling 911 at the urging of the other bystanders, while they attempted to talk with the man and reassure him until the paramedics arrived. Since the incident, Mary, typically very outgoing and empathic, has reported feeling detached from her students and her partner and also having trouble sleeping. She stated that she has nightmares every night that include vivid images of the incident.
