For this assignment, you will write a well organized 4 paragraph essay discussing the rhetorical strategies that Patrick Henry employs to achieve his purpose for addressing those in attendance at the Virginia Convention. In Patrick Henry’s speech, he tries to help members of the Second Virginia Convention see that they need to rebel against the British and fight back by using Pathos to appeal to the audience’s feelings and use Rhetorical Questions to motivate and help show the importance of the situation.

I. Introduction
Provide brief context of the scene TAG [Title, author, genre] – Patrick Henry addresses the Second Virginia Convention with a persuasive speech motivating leaders to fight back against the British.
Thesis / Purpose Statement – Patrick Henry, in his speech, works to convince members of the Second Virginia Convention to rebel against the British and fight back by using Pathos to appeal to the reader’s feelings and he uses rhetorical questions to motivate and help the audience realize the urgency of the situation.
II. Device One [topic sentence] – Patrick Henry uses Pathos to make the audience realize that, under British rule, they will be equal to slaves.

Henry states, “We have petitioned; we have remonstrated; we have supplicated; we have prostrated ourselves before the throne, and have implored its interposition to arrest the tyrannical hands of the ministry and parliament,” (Henry). This immediately makes the audience think the worst of the British government and compare them to some of the most power-abusing countries in the world.
