Project: Biodegradation of PFAS
Overarching Objective: Compile review of various laboratory studies that investigate the fate of PFAS precursors in aqueous film-forming foam (AFFF). Provide general descriiption of various PFAS biodegradation treatment technologies.
Tasks/Guiding Questions:
• Explain general mechanisms of biodegradation of PFAS in the environment
• Explain how biodegradation is used as a treatment technology for PFAS-impacted soil/water in the environment
• Many PFAS are precursors to perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs; e.g. PFOS, PFOA). It is important to understand the formation of PFAAs such as PFOS and PFOA from precursors as these compounds are the subjects of many regulations and actions due to their toxic profiles. Explain the environmental fate of these PFAA precurosors – in other words, how are PFAA precursors transformed into compounds such as PFOS and PFOA through biodegradation?
