Quantitative and Qualitative Studies Concerning Nurse Rounding
Both the quantitative and qualitative studies below involve the implementation of hourly rounding. The quantitative study focuses on the statistics of the outcomes (Beverly, 2010) while the qualitative study’s main objective is to analyze attitudes and challenges within the hourly rounding program using descriptive methodology (Walker et al., 2014).
Quantitative Study
Beverly, F. (2010). Hourly Rounding: A Strategy to Improve Patient Satisfaction Scores. MedSurg Nursing, 19(3), 188–191. Cinahl Complete.
Problem-research question: Does patient satisfaction increase as hourly rounding is instituted?
Sample size: average age of the patient was 58 including a total number of 51 patients.
Data being examined: call light frequency concerning need for the bathroom, repositioning, personal needs, and number of patient falls. Data was also collected on number of times nurse was called by accident
Data collection method: Call light usage before implementation of hourly rounding vs. call light usage while hourly rounding was being implemented. Hourly rounding charting and discharge phone call follow up also monitored for evidence of satisfaction.
Describe the method of data analysis: by looking at call light logs before and after implementation of hourly rounding
Statistical analysis: Call light use in regard to pain management and personal needs went down 2% while positioning needs went up 4%
Themes: Hourly Rounding, Patient Satisfaction, other results of hourly rounding
Phenomenology: How does hourly rounding effect the overall patient experience?
Bias: none noted
Qualitative Study
Walker, K., Duff, J., & Fitzgerald, K. (2014). “Rounding” for better patient care: An evaluation of an improvement intervention implementation. International Journal of Nursing Practice, 21(2), 207–213. https://doi.org/10.1111/ijn.12244
Problem-research question: Will the implementation process of nurse rounding be effective and how do nurses view hourly rounding in general?
Sample size: all nursing staff working on a 50 bed orthopedic unit and 38 beds GI unit
Data being examined: attitudes towards implementing nurse rounding
Data collection method: qualitative descriptive methodology
Describe the method of data analysis: 2 half hour focus group with nurses on their thoughts on the process and 2 separate more detailed interviews with nursing leadership.
Statistical analysis: None
Themes: Attitudes toward implementation of Hourly Rounding; Barriers and Challenges in getting the program off the ground
Phenomenology: response of the nurses concerning the implementation of the hourly rounding program
Bias: Some nurses felt they were already doing hourly rounding and thus this project did not need to happen. Some felt as if what they did was not noticed.
