In reading Chapter 5 of Turnock (2015) you likely came across your first exposure to the 10 Essential Public Health Services. In looking at Table 5-5 in the text, you can see the entire scope of coverage expected for Local Health Departments (LHD’s) and Public Health Offices (PHOs). What you also read is that these 10 Essentials grew from the 1945 Basic Six Services.
Using your text as the primary resource, discuss the growth of public health from the Basic Six to where it stands today.
What were the major catalysts in public health’s growth in the United States? Specifically, what changes have you seen in how our standards are organized. Are we more inclusive, do we focus on the same topic areas, and ultimately are we taking on greater responsibilities?
