Please answer the following questions about the case study below. Keep in mind the role of the Practical Nurse and learning regarding growth and development from prenatal to one year of age.
You are a nurse in a small community in the NWT, Canada. There is a new mom from your community who had to go to Edmonton when she was 28 weeks pregnant, as she was having pregnancy complications. She spent six weeks in hospital before giving birth to her premature twins, Baby A & Baby B at 34 weeks gestation. The new mom and the twins remained in the hospital until the babies were four weeks old, at which time they returned home.
You are assigned to help provide services to the new mom and her babies when they return to your community. The new mom is breast feeding the babies, but not getting much sleep due to their frequent feedings. She is a bit teary when you are chatting with her. She is afraid to leave her house without the babies even when her Mom offers to babysit and spends most of her days at home by herself with the twins. Her partner works at one of the diamond mines, and is out of town working two weeks every month. When he is home, he helps out with the babies and home responsibilities.
1. What are some ways you can support this family in your role as a Practical Nurse?
2. What are some signs that the new mom might be experiencing post party depression? As a practical nurse, what would you do if shelly was showing these signs?
3. On one visit with the new mom, when her babies are 6 months old, she tells you that she is worried about their development. When you ask her for more information, she says that her cousin’s baby is the same age and seems to be more advanced than her babies.
What is the difference between gross motor skills and fine motor skills?
What are some of the developmental milestones that are typically seen in babies by 6 months of age?
4. Where in your community could you get some information to help the new mom understand developmental milestones?
